Fact or Fiction: Taking Care of your eyes is the first step to protecting your sight for a lifetime
Myth: There is nothing you can do about preventing sight loss
Fact: Regular eye exams and proper safety eyewear can save your sight.
Myth: An eye exam is only necessary if you’re having problems
Fact: Everyone should follow a proper eye health programme that includes a regular eye exam, whether or not they are having any apparent problems. Some eye diseases are insidious and when symptoms finally ensue irreversible damage has already occurred.
Myth: Failure to use proper glasses will hurt your eyes
Fact: This statement does have some truth for a small number of people. Some children require the correct spectacles to ensure their eyes and visual centre in the brain develops normally. Corrective spectacles and contacts are needed to improve eyesight. Using your eyes with out without spectacles will not damage them further however your vision may be blurry and so not ideal for comfortable use.
Myth: Reading in dim light can damage your eyes
Fact: Reading in dim light can cause eye fatigue and hence make your eyes tired and uncomfortable, but it will not hurt your eyes
Myth: Glaucoma can be cured by medication if it is found early enough
Fact: Currently, there is no cure for glaucoma. However, there are a range of treatments including eye drops that will manage the disease and slow its progression.
Myth: You have to wait till a cataract is ‘ripe’ before it can be removed
Fact: A cataract can be removed when it reduces vision enough to be a problem to the patient, at any age. The amount of reduction in vision that can be tolerated varies from person to person.
Save our Sight is an eye health awareness campaign led by the NZ Association of Optometrists. Save our Sight aims to reduce vision loss from preventable causes such as eye injury accidents, glaucoma, macular degeneration and other eye diseases.
